Recognise the situation
Someone may impersonate a contact or take over an account to ask for money or verification codes.
Protect yourself now
Verify requests through a separate known contact method. Use WhatsApp's own recovery and linked-device controls. Never share registration codes.
What to preserve
Keep the phone number, profile identifiers, message times and payment requests. Warn affected contacts through a trusted channel.
Reporting and next steps
For money lost, call 1930 promptly and contact your bank through its verified channel. Report cybercrime at cybercrime.gov.in and keep the acknowledgement. Chakshu on Sanchar Saathi is for suspected fraudulent communications; it does not replace reporting a crime or money lost. Contact local police for immediate threats; call 112 in immediate danger.
For your complaint, record what happened, when, the platform, amount and transaction references if any, and the evidence you have. Leave unknown facts blank. A draft is not a filed report. Human assistance can help organise complex facts, but cannot guarantee recovery.
